Make Ubuntu look like Vista
1. Get Ubuntu
If you are not already using it, download Ubuntu from ubuntu.com.
2. Vista fonts
You need the microsoft segoe UI font.
Look at the second post in this Forum
Unzip the downloaded archive and place the two .ttf files in your .fonts directory.
You can find it in your user folder. /home/$USERNAME/.fonts/
For example: /home/kimmik/.fonts
If the directory .fonts does not exist, create it.
3. The Aero-clone theme
Download the Aero-clone theme from Gnome-look.org
--Go to the download site--
Install the Beryl and GTK theme as usual
4. Icons
Download the nuoveXT-aero iconset
--Go to the download site--
Install the nuoveXT-aero iconset
5. Panel
Change the gnome-panel size to 32px height
6. Vista start-button screenlet
Download and install "Desktop Screenlets"
--Go to the download site--
Install the "orb" screenlet (The orb screenlet is included in the .tar.gz from gnome-look.org).
Place the orb screenlet above the main-menu button and lock the position.
7. Wallpapers
If you want to make the experience complete download some Vista wallpapers for your desktop.

Nice theme but I cannot use it. I got the message "Invalid file format" when installing the theme. I used Ubuntu. The language is Thai.

Its a big tarball. Untar it first, theres another tar.gz in it, install this.

1) i can't get the background of titlebars out of focus (like in Vista)
2) when using the screenlets, it does no match perfectly with the orb on the panel. moreover i have an annoying up-arrow on the orb (the arrow that indicates the menu)

ok, i resolved
1) if using compiz (compiz fusion) install even WD emerald (and start it). then to get backgrounds out of focus, select the compiz plug-in about getting windows out of focus & check the option "transparent background of windows"
2) if present delete arrow-up.png in the aeroclone theme directory. to make the screnlet matching with the orb, you can edit the example-test.png, making it a pix larger :)
Mostly installed, but I don't have the min/max/close buttons in the style of Vista. I re-named aero_blue_emerald to aero_blue_emerald.tar.gz and then unpacked it to find multi-min/max/close buttons, but I don't know how to install/merge this file with the aero-clone.tar.gz file.
Other than this minor problem the theme is excellent!

Nice guide, however you lack alot of direct links (I got lost several times) to the packages that are needed. I'm also stuck at the orb and how to make the panel look more Vista.
I can install the orb thingy, but I don't get it as an option in the screenlets menu.
The only thing I've done to the panel is to make it completely dark and configure the fonts so they are white.
I can find no orb in the screenlets folder and none is offered as an option in the screenlets menu. Where do I find it?
The Orb screenlet is in a dropdown list when you klick the "custom" button.

Where can you get the nuoveXT-aero file from. It appears to be corrupted using the link provided. Also do you know if there is a fix for the screenlets in Gutsy using Compiz? With this fix hopefully I can get the orb file to load. Can you provide more detailed information on how to install the orb file?

Great guide! I was also hoping you might be able to post an update to the orb screen so that it works with Screenlets 0.7 on Gusty. Right now the screenlet fails to load with an error message:
FATAL ERROR: This screenlet seems to be written for an older version of the framework. Please download a newer version of the orbScreenlet.
Also, the link to the the aero icons on gnome-look is broken. I was able to find the archive on google here , in case anyone is interested.
The only other bug I noticed was that no icon is displayed for the "show-desktop" applet.

Any screenlets seems to randomly shut-down, and will not remember to position to place orb.

You need to disable the shadow for dock applications (do that in compiz settings).
I don't know the answers to your other screenlets problems. :|

Also, one last glitch I noticed: some dialog boxes seem to tile the taskbar graphic for a background, producing a very ugly result. For example, if you right-click on an taskbar launcher and go to "properties," you should see what I mean. Know if there is any way around this?
Okay one more bug and I should be done :)

Go to Compisettingsmanager > Windowdecoration > then change the value in the "shawow windows" entry from "any" to "normal | Menu | dialog | dropdownmenu | utility | unknown".

Unfortunately not, it happens with all pixmap themes and I don't know a workaround. :(

I propose a small enhancement for the orb screenlet. It prevents it from disappearing when using the "Show Desktop" button. I know there are some workarounds using Compiz, but if anything, they do not work when using Metacity. So here is the fix:
In orbScreenlet.py, at the beginning, add
import gtk
and at the end of the "def __init__" function, add:
self.window.set_type_hint(
gtk.gdk.WINDOW_TYPE_HINT_DOCK)
Just tried it here, works beautifully.

PS: Adding self.window.set_type_hint(
gtk.gdk.WINDOW_TYPE_HINT_DOCK)
has the side effect of disabling dragging, even when "lock" is not set. It can be confusing at first...
To adjust the position, use "X-Position" and "Y-Position" on the screenlet's Properties > Options. As a bonus, it is much easier to get the alignment right that way.
